Electronic Soft Starter

Electronic Soft Starter is also known as Solid State Reduced Voltage Starter.


The use of solid state Reduced Voltage Starting can provide a smooth stepless method of acceleration and smoothly decelerating a squirrel cage induction motor. This type of starting method, when properly applied can provide an efficient and reliable means of smoothly starting and stopping a motor and load. The use of solid-state reduced voltage starting will perform, in most cases, more efficiently than field coupling, eddy current drives and clutches. The stepless ramped acceleration and deceleration capabilities of these types of starter reduces the inrush currents to the motor, eliminating transitional shocks to the load and reducing voltage flicker on the distribution system.

Applications


MICROSTART

'MICROSTART' is a digital soft starter being manufactured by Jayashree with technical know how from M/s. Fairford Electronics Ltd., U.K.


'MICROSTART' is a microprocessor based soft starting energy optimizing, soft stopping controller for induction motor. MICROSTART incorporates world famous 3MC /4MC/5MC/QFE system developed by M/s. Fairford more than 200,0000 units incorporating this internationally known system, are working very satisfactorily in Europe for many years.


MICROSTART' generates a voltage ramp starting with low pedestal voltage and reaching 100% of the rated terminal voltage in a present time. This means that at starting, the torque exerted by the motor is less than incase of the Star Delta Starter. However, with ‘MICROSTART’, the initially applied voltage rises automatically and continuously with consequent smooth increase in the motor torque during acceleration. The difficulty experienced with Start Delta or Auto Transformer Starter when starting ‘On load’ can be overcome and the drive reaches full speed in a smooth jerkless fashion. The current during acceleration also follows a smooth pattern.


If running condition, if there is cyclic loading & unloading, then ‘MICROSTART’ automatically adjusts the terminal voltages to match with the load demand so that whenever the load on the motor is reduced the motor terminal voltage undergoes an appropriate decrease. These results in corresponding reduction in voltage dependent iron losses and therefore better efficiency. As a consequence the power factor also improves simultaneously.


ADVANTAGES OF MICROSTART

A. INDIRECT BENEFITS


To obtain soft starting with electromechanical starters one has to use a fluid coupling between the motor and the drive machine. ‘MICROSTAR’, controller costs more than its electromechanical counter part but much less than electromechanical starter plus equivalent fluid coupling. Even the most appraisals of the advantages obtainable from the application will show that there are considerable cost benefits available. The reduction in starting stress, maximum demand, wear & tear, maintenance & energy consumption together with the lower installation costs all offer contributions in offsetting the some what higher first cost.

Many installations have been immediate payback from the reduction in unscheduled shut down due to transmission failure (belts being thrown off, chains breaking etc.) 'MICROSTART' is virtually maintenance free for many years.


B. DIRECT BENEFITS


I) As per present policy, rules & regulations of the Govt. Of India. 'MICROSTART' falls in the category of 'ENERGY SAVING DEVICES' and as such, 100% depreciation on the cost of ‘MICROSTART; is allowed in the very first itself. This sets off nearly 50% of the cost of /MICROSTART; against Firm Tax. This is the direct and immediate benefit accrued by use of 'MICROSTART'


II) Direct energy saving is achieved when the equipment is partially loaded during running. However the actual saving depends on the extent of under loading and it’s duration.


MICROSTART APPLICATIONS


I) I.D. FAN:
It is high inertia load. The starting of I.D. Fan with DOL and Start Delta Starter Causes the problem of high current peak. Because of this current peak, motor accelerates with jerks thereby stressing the motor load coupling & even some time’s twist in motor or load shaft. With ‘MICROSTART’ using current limit features, current can be kept constant over the large period, achieving smooth acceleration of the motor. The starting current can be set in the range of 175% to 450% of the FLC with reduction voltage torque, the problem of damaging coupling’s or shaft are eliminated.

II) COMPRESSOR:
Starting of compressor on load causes mechanical stresses & shocks to the compressor due to violent start with jerks using DOL or Start Delta Starters. By using ‘MICROSTART” starting torque is reduced, as reduced voltage is applied at starting. This eliminates the shocks to the compressor, which ultimately results in smooth starting, minimizing wear tear to the motor accessories. The energy-optimizing feature automatically adjusts the voltage to an appropriate low value during partial load running of compressor, which ultimately reduces voltage dependent losses. This makes the motor to run at better efficiency & power factor.

III) PUMP:
Cavitation effect during starting (due to violent uncontrolled start) damages the inner surface of pump casing & pump line making them rougher & rougher as time passes. This may decrease the efficiency of pump by 1% per year. With 'MICROSTAR' a smooth & continuously increasing voltage ramp, ensures uniform acceleration. This practically eliminates the cavitation effect ensuring long duration high efficiency operation of pump. Also during stopping, abrupt switching of the pump motor accompanied by closing of delivery values puts excessive pressure of water on pipeline & valve. This practically may damage the both. With soft stopping, applied with ‘MICROSTART” motor can be stopped gradually & smoothly by providing a downward voltage ramp before final switch off. This minimizes the above said water hammer effect ensuring the long of the pipelines & valves.

IV) LATHE MACHINE / GRINDER:
The high current peak due to DOL starting often causes violent starts further causing damages to gearbox. ‘MICROSTART’ can limit this starting current resulting in smooth start & minimizing downtimes. Also with grinder & lathes, often there is situation of no load running or partial load running depending upon the size of the job. Energy optimising features in ‘MICROSTART” detects this idle running condition & accordingly reduces the voltage to optimum level achieving significant amount of energy saving.

V) BENDING MACHINE / PRESS:
Both application are high inertia loads, DOL starting causes excessively high starting torques that causes wear & tear to the belt & coupling accessories. ‘MICROSTART’ with current limiting features can start the machines even at reduces voltage, extending the life of belt. In both bending & press machines motor run on no load for most of the times in one operating cycle. The energy saving feature enables the motor to run at reduced optimum level of voltage causing significant amount of energy saving.

VI) CRUSHER:
Crusher motors are generally oversized. They take high starting currents starting is difficult when jammed. ‘MICROSTART’ with ‘Kick Start’ feature is ideal solution for use with crusher. It gives smooth starting, can start even when jammed.

VII) MOULDING MACHINES:
The nature of operation is cyclic for a moulding machine where full power is drawn only for a short time. ‘MICROSTART’ is highly recommended for moulding machines as good amount of energy is saved and operational life of machine is extended with starting on normal ramp.

VIII) SAND MANUFACTURING MACHINES:
These are special machines. Plants are located in remote places having either poor quality of power or limited captive power. Current limited starting helps to cope-up with supply capacity and load torque requirements. Kick – Start features enables to overcome necessary starting frictional torque.

IX) CHILDERS:
These machines have totally variable type of load pattern. Microstart is very useful for both purposes namely smooth kickless start with no transition is achieved and energy saving possibilities when chiller is running on part load conditions. This minimizes the wear & tear of mechanical components and also reduces voltage dependant loss.
